How Collaboration Shaped a Bespoke Terrazzo Table for dMFK Architects
A handcrafted story of design intent, collaboration, and creative alignment within the dMFK Materials Lab
A Vision Below Ground
When dMFK Architects reimagined the lower-ground floor of their London headquarters — now known as Downstairs at dMFK — their goal was to create more than a workspace.
They envisioned a place where design exploration, conversation, and material research could coexist, an extension where architecture meets craft, a space dedicated to experimentation and collaboration.
To anchor the room, the architects imagined a bespoke terrazzo table, a centrepiece that could reflect their identity and act as a gathering point for creative exchange.
Our team was invited to collaborate in bringing this vision to life, not only as makers but as partners who understand how to turn design intent into tangible form.
Crafting a Story in Stone
From the outset, the project evolved through a dialogue between architects and specialists.
The ambition was clear: to create a piece that felt permanent yet refined, an object that would serve as both a working surface and a sculptural focal point.
Through design workshops and material sampling, we explored aggregate size, colour tone, and edge profiles, carefully developing a composition that echoed dMFK’s material sensibility.
Every detail was intentional, from the subtle shift of light across the surface to the quiet strength of its construction.
A Process built on precision
The terrazzo table was entirely handmade in our workshop.
Casting, curing, grinding, and polishing each section demanded both technical accuracy and a feel for the material’s behaviour. The mix incorporated recycled materials and locally sourced aggregates, balancing aesthetics with sustainability, a reflection of the shared commitment to responsible design.
Throughout the process, collaboration was a constant.
Architects, makers, and technicians exchanged feedback to fine-tune proportions, test finishes, and ensure that the final piece embodied both design ambition and functional performance.
A Table That Speaks the Language of Design
Today, the terrazzo table sits proudly at the centre of the space, surrounded by samples, fabrics, and the evolving ideas that fuel architectural creation.
It serves as a platform for experimentation, a place where textures are compared, colours tested, and projects discussed.
Its tactile finish invites touch, while the embedded aggregates give it character and depth.
It reflects the shared ethos of our company and dMFK Architects, a belief in craftsmanship, responsible materials, and design with purpose.
This collaboration was recently featured in Mix Interiors, Issue 240, one of the UK’s leading publications in the commercial interiors’ industry.
In the article “Beneath the Surface”, dMFK’s new basement workspace is celebrated as a space that merges studio, workshop, and gallery.
Seeing the work recognised by such a respected platform was rewarding for everyone involved.
Storytelling as a Craft
For our team, every project begins with a story — a shared why.
This terrazzo table is more than an object; it represents how collaboration, material curiosity, and attention to detail can transform a brief into something lasting.
By communicating the why behind a project, not just the how, we strengthen the connection between those who design and those who build.
