Bespoke Terrazzo Table for dMFK Architects – ‘Downstairs at dMFK’, London

As part of the refurbishment of ‘Downstairs at dMFK’, the newly renovated basement workspace of dMFK Architects, we collaborated closely with the architects to craft a bespoke terrazzo table as the centrepiece of the space.
The ambition was clear: to create a table that felt solid yet refined, structurally robust, visually elegant, and conceived as an architectural object in its own right. Through cast-made terrazzo and meticulous hand finishing, we helped bring that vision to life.

    Design and Structure

The terrazzo top features a full bullnose edge and softened curves, creating the impression of a continuous, unified surface. Two cylindrical bases, a solid leg, and a central panel provide balance and stability to achieve the desired sense of lightness without compromising presence. The terrazzo was applied to lightweight panels, reducing the overall weight while preserving the look and feel of solid material.

    Handcrafted

Every stage of the process was carried out by hand: from casting and joining to honing and polishing. The result is precise geometry, seamless junctions, and a surface with natural character, designed to be both seen and touched.

As one of the directors from dMFK remarked: “It looks effortless — but it’s not.” Every detail was refined by hand until the result felt effortless.

    Sustainability

Terrazzo is a naturally sustainable material, made using recycled aggregates from the stone cutting process and surplus from quarries. For this project, aggregates were locally sourced to minimise transport emissions and support circular economy principles. The binder is based on CSA cement technology, a more sustainable alternative to traditional Portland cement. Produced at lower temperatures, it reduces CO₂ emissions while achieving high strength, minimal shrinkage, and long-term durability.
