Natural Stone Flooring and Bespoke Stone Cladding
At 2 Aldermanbury Square, we delivered a complete package of natural stone flooring across multiple levels, alongside bespoke stone cladding in the reception area, combining technical control, material expertise, and precision installation throughout the building.Working alongside Brown & Carroll, with Bovis as main contractor and Allies and Morrison as architects, we contributed to the delivery of a reception space defined by an imposing Green Wall and the elegant limestone flooring.
Our scope included nearly 1,000 m² of limestone within the Reception Area, plus circa 200 m² of the natural stone forming the Green Wall, and almost 2,000 m² of limestone flooring and skirting across the lift lobbies and basement levels, from Level 1 to Level 12, including B1 and B2.
A specialist approach to natural stone, tiling and cladding
As stone specialists, we managed the process from early material selection and procurement through to design coordination, dry lay processes and final installation.Every stage was carefully controlled, including:
- Material selection and slab analysis based on approved samples, mock-ups and project specifications;
- Digital and physical dry lay to define and validate layout, orientation and overall visual intent before installation;
- Precise setting out and alignment in accordance with approved drawings, levels and tolerances;
- Coordination of interfaces and junctions with adjacent elements to ensure harmony between finishes;
- Control of the finish (polished in-situ) and verification of slip resistance in line with specification requirements;
- Coordination and sequencing with other trades to maintain workflow and protect completed areas;
- Structural coordination and compliance with engineering requirements, including installation of support systems in line with approved details;
- Pull-out testing of fixings and anchors to confirm load capacity and compliance;
- Ongoing site inspections and quality checks throughout the installation process;
- Final inspection and handover in line with quality standards expected for the project.
The Green Wall – bespoke natural stone cladding
One of the defining features of the project is the Green Wall within the Reception Area, a bespoke internal stone cladding wall designed to express the full character of the material.The intention was to bring out the natural variation, movement and texture of the stone, creating a surface that feels both bold and elegant. Achieving this result required extensive coordination, planning and specialist knowledge before installation began.
Digital and physical dry lay
Before the stone reached site, the layout was developed through a combination of digital dry lay and physical dry lay.Each slab was analysed individually to understand its tone, texture and variation, ensuring that only selected portions aligned with the intended design.
The digital layout defined the overall composition, while the physical dry lay allowed the team to test and refine the arrangement at full scale before installation. The combed finish introduced an additional level of complexity, requiring every slab to be installed in a consistent direction to maintain visual continuity across the stone cladding wall. This process allowed us to control the final appearance, reduce material waste and ensure effective coordination between design, fabrication and installation. The physical dry lay took place in a large warehouse facility, where a dedicated viewing platform allowed the client and architects to review the layout from above. Seeing the wall as a whole made it possible to refine the composition, adjust the sequence and achieve the right visual balance before the material was transported from Italy, where the stone was processed and manufactured, to site. Each slab was carefully handled, rotated and repositioned a hands-on process that played a key role in shaping the final result.
Engineered Metal support system for stone cladding
Behind the finished stone surface sits a fully engineered metal support system, designed to ensure the safe and precise installation of the stone cladding. The frame was installed using laser levelling equipment to achieve accurate positioning of brackets and rails, maintaining consistent alignment across the wall. Quality checks were carried out throughout installation, including pull-out testing of fixings, to confirm performance and compliance with specification requirements.Reception Area – limestone flooring and coordinated finishes
Within the Reception Area, procurement, design coordination and installation were managed as one continuous process. This ensured the stone cladding wall, limestone flooring and surrounding elements worked together as a balanced and cohesive whole.The floor finish was developed by us to meet slip resistance requirements, while also creating a seamless surface that enhances the natural character of the stone. From early material selection through to installation, every stage was carefully controlled. Working within a tight programme, we coordinated closely with other trades to maintain progress while protecting the quality of the finished work.Lift lobbies and basement limestone flooring
Beyond the Reception Area, we delivered nearly 2,000 m² of limestone flooring and skirting across the lift lobbies and basement levels. This required a consistent and controlled approach across multiple floors, maintaining alignment, levels and finish quality throughout the building. Careful setting out ensured continuity between spaces, particularly at thresholds, interfaces and transitions.The limestone flooring was installed to achieve a uniform finish across all areas, creating a consistent look from Level 1 to Level 12, including B1 and B2.Result – from design coordination to installation
This project started as a vision , to express the full potential of natural stone and define the space through it. As stone specialists, our role was to guide that vision at every stage, from early design coordination and material selection through the final installation. The result is a project where natural stone, tiling and cladding come together seamlessly turning design intent into a built reality.Stone Cladding & Natural Stone Flooring London | 2 Aldermanbury Square
